Mayor Scott and the City of Baltimore Celebrate Black History Month

BALTIMORE, MD (Tuesday, February 4, 2025) - Today, Mayor Brandon M. Scott issued the following message to mark the beginning of Black History Month in Baltimore.

This month, we celebrate the legacy, excellence, and contributions of African Americans who have woven the fabric of our nation. It is essential to recognize that Black people built this country through labor and sacrifices for free. You cannot tell the story of Black history without mentioning Baltimore - home to pioneers like the late Thurgood Marshall, Lillie Mae Carroll Jackson, Victorine Adams, and leaders like Parren Mitchell, Clarence Mitchell Jr., Elijah Cummings, and Kweisi Mfume, who have fought and continue to fight for our future. Our city has long been a hub of Black culture, with neighborhoods like Upton and Harlem Park shaping artistic and political movements that have influenced generations.

This Black History Month, amid ongoing attacks on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) on the national political stage, we aim to refocus our attention on the invaluable contributions made by the diverse figures who have shaped American Life and highlight individuals who have "Definitely Earned It." Despite the efforts of some, we must resist efforts to downplay or erase the history of the contributions of African Americans in every corner of our city and our country. It is essential to engage in honest conversations about systemic racism and celebrate the contributions of Black people. Unfortunately, some have chosen to intentionally misconstrue the goals of DEI initiatives and chosen to attempt to scapegoat diversity for any and every challenge facing our nation. This brazenly political attack only underscores the necessity for proactive measures to protect and promote the value that our diversity brings.

Moving forward, I will highlight local and national Black figures this Black History Month, celebrating their significant contributions to every aspect of American life, from inventions like the stoplight to advancements in military and health sciences to fearless leadership in the fight for Civil Rights. Black history is American history. This DEI ("Definitely Earned It") campaign will feature notable Black figures throughout the month, emphasizing their contributions and affirming that we will continue to celebrate Black History Month locally regardless of what attacks arise at the national level. The campaign will showcase well-known and lesser-known Black figures, including many connected to Baltimore, that illustrate the hard work and resilience required for success - and that remind us the importance of continuing to press forward in the face of adversity.

Let this month, and every month, serve as a reminder to continue fighting for equity and justice in our neighborhoods and worldwide. Let's support Black-owned businesses across the city hoping to build their dream and uplift every young person seeking to achieve their full potential. I encourage students and lifelong learners to continue exploring Black history, as it is an integral part of our nation's story. Our history is rich, our voices are powerful, and, even still, our future has the potential to be beyond bright. That is the lesson from Black history, and we will continue to celebrate it unapologetically.

Together, let's share our history and the stories of excellence and strength that fuel our legacy while investing in the next generation of history-makers. Happy Black History Month, Baltimore!
